Frequently asked questions
What kind of custom illustration projects do you accept? If your project requires a whimsical, nature-focused, or deeply narrative style, we're likely the perfect creative partner. We specialize in high-impact, narrative artwork, including:
Book Art: Fantasy book covers, children's book interiors, and spot illustrations.
Branding: Distinctive brand mascots, logos with custom illustration, and key visual assets.
Large-Scale Art: Indoor and outdoor mural commissions.
Character-Driven Art: Character designs and commercial art with a storytelling focus.
What kind of projects do you not take on? To ensure the highest quality, we generally do not accept projects that fall outside our core style. This includes:
Highly realistic portraiture
Minimalist logos or corporate/infographic design
General graphic design projects (like brochures or web layouts)
Can you replicate the style of another artist? No. When you hire Rabbit Trail Studio, you're investing in our unique, original artistic voice and style. While we encourage you to share inspirational references for color, mood, and composition, the final artwork will always be a distinctive creation from our studio.
How do I get started and receive a quote? The best first step is to submit our Custom Project Inquiry Form. This form helps us understand your vision, required usage, scope, and timeline. We'll review your details and respond within 3 business days with a tailored quote, our next available booking dates, or a request for follow-up details.
What is the custom illustration process? Our collaborative process is designed for clarity and efficiency, involving four key phases:
Discovery & Quote: Define the scope, budget, and agree on the contract.
Sketch & Approval: We create initial concepts/sketches, and you provide feedback to solidify the composition. This is the key revision point.
Final Illustration & Feedback: The artwork is completed in full color. One round of minor adjustments is included.
Final Delivery: Upon receipt of the final payment, the high-resolution files are securely delivered.
How long will my custom project take? We pride ourselves on efficient, high-quality delivery. Timelines vary based on complexity, but here are our typical turnarounds:
Book Cover: Approximately 2 weeks
Custom Illustration (single image): A few days to 2 weeks
Children's Book Interior: 1 to 6 months
Mural Commission: 1–2 weeks (Conceptualization) + 2–5 days (On-Site Painting)
Do you offer rush or expedited services? Yes! We specialize in fast turnarounds when notified in advance. For extra-fast delivery (needed in a day or just a few days), we offer a rush service with an additional fee that will be clearly outlined in your custom quote.
What are your payment terms? Our payment structure is designed to be clear and fair, with terms that adapt to the project's scope:
For Standard Projects (Book Covers, Single Illustrations, Murals): We require a 50% non-refundable deposit to secure your booking and begin the sketching phase. The remaining 50% balance is due upon your final approval, before the final, high-resolution files are delivered to you.
For Children's Book Interiors & Other Large-Scale Projects: These comprehensive projects begin with a $500 non-refundable Discovery & Booking Fee.
What this covers: This initial fee secures your spot in our schedule and covers the in-depth consultation, style exploration, initial character development, and the creation of your detailed, multi-page project quote.
How it works: Once you approve the full project quote, this $500 payment is applied directly to your first project milestone.
The total project cost is then divided into a milestone-based structure:
50% Deposit (less the $500 fee already paid): Due upon signing the contract to begin full storyboards and all remaining sketches.
25% Milestone Payment: Due upon your approval of all final sketches for the entire book, before final color illustration begins.
25% Final Payment: Due upon your final approval of all completed, colored artwork, and before the high-resolution, press-ready files are delivered.
3. Copyright & Usage Rights
Who owns the copyright to the final artwork? As the creator, I retain the full copyright and ownership of all artwork I produce. This is standard industry practice and protects my work.
What usage rights am I purchasing? You are purchasing a license to use the artwork for a specific, agreed-upon purpose. The details of this license will be clearly defined in our contract.
Example for a Book Cover: The license would grant you rights to use the image as the cover for your book in print and digital formats, including promotional materials for that book.
Example for a Personal Commission: The license would be for personal use only (e.g., printing for your home, use as a social media profile picture). It would not include the right to sell merchandise (like t-shirts or prints) featuring the art.
Can I use the artwork for other things later? The license is specific to the purpose outlined in our contract. If you later decide you want to use the artwork for a different purpose (e.g., turning a book cover character into a line of merchandise), you must contact me to negotiate a new license and additional fee.
Do you (the artist) show the art in your portfolio? Yes. I reserve the right to display all completed artwork in my portfolio, on my website, and on social media for self-promotional purposes. If your project is confidential and requires an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) or a delay in me showing the work, please let me know during the Discovery phase, as this may affect the project quote.
What if I want to buy the full copyright (a "buyout")? Purchasing the full copyright (a "work-for-hire" agreement or full buyout) is a separate service that transfers all ownership from me to you. This is a significant rights transfer and is priced substantially higher than a standard usage license. If you are interested in a full buyout, please specify this when you request a quote.
